AOL maintains the Netscape website as an Internet portal. AOL allows downloading of archived versions of the Netscape Navigator web browser family. On 28 December 2007, AOL canceled its development but continued supporting the web browser with security updates until 1 March 2008.
The Netscape Navigator name returned in 2007 when AOL announced version 9 of the Netscape series of browsers, Netscape Navigator 9. Netscape's Mozilla Suite also served as the base for a browser-only spinoff called Mozilla Firefox.

Netscape Communicator's 4.x source code was the base for the Netscape-developed Mozilla Application Suite, which was later renamed SeaMonkey. The Netscape Navigator web browser was succeeded by the Netscape Communicator suite in 1997. The decision came too late for Netscape, however, as Internet Explorer had by then become the dominant web browser in Windows. The business demise of Netscape was a central premise of Microsoft's antitrust trial, wherein the Court ruled that Microsoft's bundling of Internet Explorer with the Windows operating system was a monopolistic and illegal business practice. This was partly because the Netscape Corporation (later purchased by AOL) did not sustain Netscape Navigator's technical innovation in the late 1990s.
It was the flagship product of the Netscape Communications Corp and was the dominant web browser in terms of usage share in the 1990s, but by around 2003 its use had almost disappeared.

From appearance options to reading offline messages everything can be configured to some extent from that area of the program.Netscape Navigator was a proprietary web browser, and the original browser of the Netscape line, from versions 1 to 4.08, and 9.x. Insofar as the customization is concerned, Netscape Communicator offers a wide choice of settings which are available from the 'Preferences' menu of the application. There is a handy quick access toolbar that makes it possible to open the needed module with a single click. Keeping track of contacts can be easily done, thanks to the Address Book component, while keeping in touch with friends is a couple of clicks away, with the Netscape Instant Messenger. Other features like accessing the preferred newsgroups or editing HTML code are also provided by Netscape Communicator and they can be opened from the dedicated menu, regardless of the application in the suite the user is currently working on. Inside the Communicator users can find an e-mail client which provides pretty much all the necessary functions for sending, receiving and managing messages. Nonetheless, the modern standards in HTML and other technologies make the old Netscape included in this suite obsolete. The Navigator is the primary tool and it is equipped with many features for getting useful information from a friendly interface.

Netscape Communicator was one such software solution and its popularity was due to the numerous extra options that came by default in the package. Just as most users these days, a decade or more ago the majority of those who went online looked for an application to help them with more than opening webpages.
